Three Blind Mice

There’s a new addition to the family! So yes, I’m still in Tumu with my NGO & they just got the cutest puppy from a friend of theirs in Tamale. She’s as playful as anything, is only about 1.5 months old, & has a fur coat of white, tan & gray. Jonas & I gave her a bath when she first got here, but we’ll need to give her another one soon because she gets into everything! My NGO wanted to give her a Sisaala proverb name, so they named her Zi Le Keng Chie (literally translated into “goodness has tomorrow” but figuratively means “goodness of the future”). If it was up to me, I would have named her Shadow because she follows me everywhere & if I’m not careful, I’ll step on her because she tries to gnaw on my shoelaces or the heel strap of my Tevas. She’s adorable anyway so I’ve posted some pictures of her below. My NGO already has a female dog named Ngaa worung na (meaning, “do well & see”) but she is an older dog that doesn’t want to be bothered with the puppy, so she’ll growl & snarl at her. Another reason why I’ve taken a liking to this new dog – to rescue her from Ngaa worung na that could easily tear her to shreds.

This past week went by really quickly with the Peace Corps here for the Dry Season Gardening IST. It was nice to meet some PCVs from the Northern Region that I hadn’t met before & there was one PCV from the far away Western Region that came as well. He lives on the coast overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. So not fair…let’s not talk about it. Anyway, all of the PCVs & supervisors loved the food that my NGO provided them, especially the baked goodies that I gave them for snack. In the morning, the classroom sessions for the IST were held at TUTCO (Tumu Training College) where Travis, my closest PCV neighbor, teaches ICT (Internet & Computer Technology). In the afternoon, the fieldwork was done in 3 surrounding villages: Pulima, Jawia & Kupulima. The last day of the IST, we constructed a drip irrigation system in Kupulima where David, my next closest PCV neighbor, lives. Fortunately, Kupulima has a dam, so setting up a drip irrigation system was possible. Unfortunately, my village Chinchang doesn’t have a dam, so no drip irrigation system for me – manual labor all the way. Anyway, setting up the system wasn’t easy, but with several PCVs, some of the Danish health workers & help from some of the Kupulima farmers, we finished it all in one day. According to David, the most important things to remember to do with a drip irrigation system are to flush out the system & to check the filter. Word to the wise, do exactly that. Because as soon as we flushed out the system by letting the water run through the pipes & tubing that we just set up, there were clumps of reddish-brown sediment that poured out & then the water stopped flowing entirely. Hmm that’s strange everyone thought…no one turned off the pump. “Let’s check the filter!” exclaimed Jordan (my third closest neighbor located about an hour south of Tumu), acting all happy because he remembered what David had instructed us. He then turned the control valve to stop the water flow, in case it started up again while checking the filter, when everyone heard the loudest CRUNCH. Well, I don’t really know how many mice were in the tubes or if they truly were blind, but I do know that they were dumb enough to crawl through our drip irrigation system because all of them died that day. Pictures shown below - just in case anyone was interested. In the end, we finished flushing out the system, including the mice guts, & we were finally able to watch water dripping out of the holes in the tubing. Then we planted some cucumber seeds & snap peas. Not too bad for a day’s work.
As for a sports update, CONGRATS GIANTS! And congrats to my dad & brother for winning the Super Bowl pool final score box = ) I wish I was there to celebrate with all of you (family & family friends) back home at the Super Bowl party, but I’m sure everyone had plentyyy of fun without me haha especially my cousin Nick that I’m sure was jumping up & down screaming his head off once the Giants won. Miss all of you & hope you ate some hot wings for me. And for other football news, I’ve also been watching Ghana play football (or our American soccer) in all of its matches in the African Cup of Nations on the TV in my NGO’s guesthouse. Their most recent game was playing against Tunisia in the quarterfinals & Ghana won 2-1, but their final goal was in OT & they were really lucky that they even got it. “It’s not easy oh!” all of the Ghanaians will say - & don’t forget the “oh” or you won’t be talking like a true Ghanaian. Ghana took a shot on goal & the Tunisian goalie deflected the ball rather than holding it, so a Ghanaian forward was there to easily tap it in. Luck, pure luck. Ghana has some good players, but as a team, they aren’t cohesive. I just hope that Ghana won’t get creamed by Zambia on Wednesday.
Oh, & I’m sick again. I think it’s a combination of heat exhaustion, eating unfamiliar Ghanaian food & overworking myself – but my NGO says it’s malaria. Then again, as soon as someone is sick in Ghana, the locals always say it’s malaria. Chissà? (in Italiano: “Who knows?”) But it gave Jonas (because he got sick the same exact time that I did..as well as half our guesthouse staff. weird.) & I an excuse to hang around & watch movies. One of the movies that we watched was 127 Hours & although that was the third or fourth time I watched it, it still reminds me of how important it is to cherish the people I care about in life. I mean, you never know what can suddenly happen to you, your family, friends, acquaintances, that really nice person that you just met on the subway - okay, well maybe not that person, they were probably a creeper – but really, the list is endless. So don’t end on a bad note with people & no matter how independent you might want to be, keep in touch with those that you care about. Whether it’s a relationship among family members, between a husband & wife, boyfriend & girlfriend, you & Joe Shmo down the street…keeping relationships are hard – they’re not meant to be easy. People always make the excuse, “I don’t have the time,” but then make the time. I thought that I would have so much down time here in Ghana, but since I’ve been living with my work, I’ve been working nonstop & see where that got me? Sick in bed. So make the time to call that person you didn’t call back yet, tell the ones you love that you love them, write to your friend who now lives on a different continent because it will make her the happiest girl around (just a little plug on my part haha), etc. It’s not too late to change your ways.

Love from miles away,
Rachel
Zi le keng chie & I.
The cutest puppy in town.
A few years ago, a VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) volunteer had built a playground in Tumu, but when he left, the playground shut down. Until I walked passed the entrance did I see that some kids had broken the door open & were playing inside.
Gorgeous dam in Kupulima, David's village, where our Dry Season Gardening IST took place.
One of the gardens in Kupulima. This is what happens if you have good fencing, a dam, mini reservoirs, & a hose to easily water your plants.
Setting up the drip irrigation system in Kupulima.

Oh hey, that’s me punching holes into the tubing to connect the drip lines to the main line.

A control valve, missing filter, & mice guts. Nice.

Success! Watching the water drip down from the drip lines after the system was flushed out & officially turned on.

  1. Hi Rachel,
I love your new little puppy! He is so cute, yes Shadow would be a good name as Aunt Patty named their Weiner dog Shadow and he does just that...follow you everywhere, licking at your feet and legs. How loveable and what a good companion, unlike cats. Just sayin'... HAHA. Do you know what kind of dog it is?
Our Boys Soccer team (real soccer as you know it) is #1 champs so far in districts. They are playing in the finals this week. We all wore Titusville Terrier blue today to support them. One of the players is in my Patient Care class so we always applaud him when he comes to the classroom.
You are quite the plumber, Uncle Steve would be proud, and maybe give you some pointers, as that is his profession. I planted some cucumbers, lettuce, radishes, basil and oregano this past weekend as I believe the threat of frost is over. Uncle Steve is going to put a drip system in around the house and in the garden where the sprinklers don't reach. I remember your mom complaining about dragging hoses, I know how she feels. You have mouse guts we have lizard guts that get caught in the hose ends and get crushed. I would wonder why the water wasn't coming out, I'd look inside and there is was a crushed lizard YUK! Interesting picture.
Well, Amanda and her boyfriend, Will, are coming home for Spring Break the first week in March. Can you believe it is almost Spring already?
It is always good to read your blog and hear about the amazing things you accomplish every day! Keep up the great work, you are always in our thoughts and in our hearts.
    Love you,
Aunt Cathy, Uncle Steve and Amanda

  2. Hi Rachel,
Zi le keng chie sounds like such a long name to call a dog. Do you have a nickname for him like Zi or Chie? I bet he's glad to see you when you get home! All his puppy kisses are really the love and best wishes we send you across the miles! We celebrated Uncle Duane's 50th bday on Monday by putting out all our gravestones from Halloween and stuffing the mailbox full of AARP mail, Depends samples, hearing aid flyers and all kinds of old age stuff we collected over the past year. We had a small Carvel ice cream cake that we topped with 50 candles. It was starting to melt before he could blow out the candles! Just think of the mouse guts as fertilizer-maybe it will make the plants grow better! Katelyn loves to catch lizards and frogs but they bite her or pee on her!
We didn't watch the SuperBowl but I was happy the Giants won. I won a 5 cent bet with Uncle Duane at he thought the Patriots would win!
I'll show Gma your pics and let her read your blog when she comes over on Saturday. We are so proud of everything you are accomplishing and share your stories often. Keep up the good work!
Love Aunt Patty, Uncle Duane, Kyle and Katelyn, Grandma too!

  4. Rachel,

A puppy! He's so small and so cute.. he will be great company for you... they are SUCH wonderful animals (maybe your Mom will let you bring him home with you :-) I'll start working on her.. LOL).

Sounds like your days are full and you're making great progress. When I read your blogs I find myself shaking my head and smiling... Amazed at all the things you are doing... it's hard to express just how proud we are of you!

I think of you often, your easy and beautiful smile and gentle ways. You are certainly an angel for the people of Tumu...

Hopefully you are feeling better. We send you lots of love, big hugs and many kisses.

    Bob and Margaret

  5. Rae, No Puppy! Although he looks so adorable asleep on your lap! He follows you around because you are in his eyes, HIS MOM! He will be a good friend to you with unconditional love, like Oreo, who truly misses you, especially when she roams around in your bedroom & looks out your window. I think waiting for you. I remember when Sparky was a pup, she ate my leather shoelaces & Aunt Cathy's dog ate the wooden legs on her kitchen table! They are teething, like babies & need something to gnaw on. I'm sure dog toys are not available there, so sticks will do. I'll have to send you some toys, incl. a frisbee! You had me worried there for awhile not feeling well. My heart sank when you told me malaria. My worst fear was you won't get better & they will have no choice but to send you home kicking & screaming! But our last conversation, hearing you laugh, let me know you were on the road to recovery. I'm glad you are reading your body & know you can't push yourself. You're not at school anymore. It's O.K. to rest. You won't get punished for it. There will always be a lot to do there & there will always be "domani". You may just need a "cambiare aria" so you don't feel "sono stufa"! Enough Italian, how's your Sisali? Hope you are practicing before you get to Chinchang. It's great to see your pictures, although I wish I didn't enlarge to see mouse guts leaking from the valve! Whatever you were planting, hopefully, got extra nutients! Spoke to Senora Certosimo & she said to say hello. Christopher & I will be going to the H.S. play, Beauty & the Beast on 3/3. Weather still warmish for winter compared to last year. Not complaining, although I wonder what's in store since Eastern Europe is getting hammered with snow & freezing temps. They even had to close the Colosseum in Rome because of snow! Oh well, keep up the good work there. Stay safe, be strong & keep on smiling:)
    All my love, MOM

  6. We are so heartbroken at the news of Whitney Houston, so beautiful and talented, dead at the age of 48. Suspected drug abuse. Still investigating...such a tradedy. I will always love you..my favorite song!

  8. Aunt Cathy, Uncle Steve & Amanda, haha yess I absolutely love the dog that SILDEP has but I have no clue what type of dog that it is! It's probably some weird mix like all of the dogs here. There's no such thing as an animal shelter or dog pound or dog breeders like that around here so they're pretty much all wild. Ohh tell your boys soccer team congrats! I'm sure they're extremely happy to be in first place. And tell Uncle Steve that if he wants more work to do as a plumber, there's plenty of plumbing work that needs to be done here in Ghana!..just in case he was bored or anything & wanted to stop over haha. The drip system sounds like such a good idea for being in Florida, it's a lot hotter down there than in NJ! HA & I guess we have some things in common with annoying little creatures crawling into our water systems haha but hopefully they don't break our systems is the problem! Tell Amanda to have fun on Spring Break, she needs a break from all of her classes! Crazy how it's almost spring already...I feel like it's just been a really bad summer for a long time - & I'm just beginning haha. Thanks for always thinking of me & I love reading your comments! <3 from hot Africa, Rachel
Aunt Patty, Uncle Duane, Kyle, Katelyn & Grandma, HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY UNCLE DUANE...YA OLDYY! Hahaha I hope he gets a kick outta that = ) I hope he had a great birthday..let me guess, he watched a ton of Star Wars with Kyle? Either he did or he wishes he did <3 It seems like all of you had fun finding all crazy old-people things to give him haha I was laughing so loud while reading what you got him! As for the new puppy that my NGO & I have, the watchman started calling her Keng Chie instead of the full Zi le keng chie, so I guess her name is kinda shortened, but yea it's still not what I would have chosen for a name. Congrats on winning the extra 5 cents haha go Giants! And I hope Grandma doesn't get freaked out when looking at the mice guts! AHHH I can't believe I didn't mention this sooner, I JUST GOT YOUR PACKAGE! I have no idea what's inside of it because I didn't even open it yet, but I had to bring it to Ghana Customs & they opened it by inspecting it first & I couldn't see what they were doing. My NGO receptionist was nice enough to drive me to the post office, then to Ghana Customs & then drop me off at the Training College where I get internet, so he took the packages to my NGO so as soon as I get back, I'll have 3 packages to open! Yours, my mom's & my friend who I studied abroad with in Florence surprised me with a package as well! THANK-YOU SO MUCH! Like I said, I have no clue what's inside, but I finallyyyy received the package so at least it's not lost! Love you & miss you all & I'll let you know my reaction to what's inside the next time I get internet! <3 Rachel

  9. Margaret & Bob, thank-you for always thinking of me. I truly miss being around you guys because you always ask how I am & what I'm up to. You show that you care x1000! I know that you're worried about me but I'll be OK, just make sure that my mom is OK with me being out here haha. Love you & am glad you still somehow find the time in your busy lives to read my blog! <3 Always, Rachel
Mom, I just talked to you on the phone, but I just wanted to say, I always love your blog comments. You always manage to make me laugh = ) By the way, if you didn't see from my above comment to Aunt Patty, I FINALLYYY GOT YOUR PACKAGE! I have no clue what's inside..other than the brick red backpack that the Customs guys took out in front of me & then turned their backs once they opened it..hahahah that'll most definitely match the dust around here!
Whitney Houston person, I have no idea who you are, but thanks for the info. If this is Travis reading my blog, I'm gonna find out sooner or later, & then I'm going to punch you.
Kyle, haha no prob & yeaa mail takes forever to get here sometimes so nope I didn't get your mail yet but I'll keep an eye out!

  12. Thanks everyone for my birthday wishes = ) My birthday hasn't exactly been relaxing unfortunately but oh well, that's what you get when you live with your work & you have no time to yourself. Aunt Patty, I absolutely loved the birthday button, blower, candles, birthday goodie bag, plate & napkins hahaha <3 I was able to use the birthday candles on a cake that my NGO made me, but I almost wish that I could have helped make it. Margrit hates sweet things, so it didn't taste very good, & to top it off, there were some surprise guests that she just offered my cake to, so I was planning on eating my cake later tonight with just Margrit, Jonas, Lydia & I, but oh well. I'm lucky to get any "cake" at all haha so I can't complain. Thanks for thinking of me everyone & Aunt Patty, Grandma, & Aunt Cathy - be prepared for a VERY long inbox from me muahahahah just a heads up for what it's about...thanks for your AWESOME package! <3 Rachel
